Exercise Therapy and Living with Chronic Pain - Mary Beth's Story

Updated: Aug 15, 2023

If you suffer from chronic pain or inflammatory conditions, you may find that working with an Exercise Therapist makes a significant, positive difference in everyday life.

I would not be where I am today without these therapies and I would be so much worse health wise. I am truly grateful for this expertise and want to share it with all who need improved mobility, without causing more harm.

My body certainly has issues. I have several chronic pain processes, including fibromyalgia, degenerative joint disease, peripheral neuropathy, and more. In 2005, I started experiencing chronic pain, stiffness, and muscle fatigue all over my body. It worsened and evolved over time. I was unable to work and eventually required to go on Disability Leave.

My health conditions make mobility so difficult and it’s very possible they will get worse. My medical specialists advised me to do something to keep my body moving, or someday I would not be able to move.

I had worked with various personal trainers, but they did not have the functional training expertise to deal with someone with disabling chronic pain health conditions. They pushed me with exercise regimens that were often too hard on me.

I have also worked with plenty of Physical Therapists. While I appreciate and need their expertise, their focus is primarily mobility. I needed an expert to help me not just achieve mobility but also build strength and muscle.

My research lead me to a profession known as Exercise Therapy. This specialty focuses on the musculoskeletal system - specifically strengthening muscle post injury or while living with chronic conditions to improve mobility.

They are trained to develop and design corrective and even therapeutic exercise programs. They often work directly with physical therapy to assist in a client's full recovery once full range of motion is achieved.

I was thrilled to learn Pro Push Fitness has an Exercise Therapist and started working with them in September 2020. This is easily one of the best things I have ever done for myself! It was exactly what I needed to start improving my quality of life and functional daily movements.

Now, nearly two years later, I can feel how much strength and mobility training has helped me. Working a custom strength training program, built specific for my needs, improved more than just mobility and strength.

I can feel improvement in my range of motion, daily endurance, energy and overall physical conditioning.

Surprisingly, I made these improvements with as little as two sessions a week. This experience has been encouraging and supportive.

I recommend anyone who has reservations with exercise due to chronic illness or even accident and injury recoveries, to consider working with an Exercise Therapist.

Rather than experiencing more pain or possible injuries I have been guided by an expert through an exercise regimen that benefits me and am actually seeing and feeling results.

While I do and will continue to struggle daily with chronic pain, working specifically with a trained professional has made a noticeable and positive difference for me.

For instance, my husband and I like to go to hockey games. It used to beat me up climbing the stairs in the high stands. I would feel ready to keel over once I finally reached the top of the stairs. Now, I don’t feel ready to keel over anymore at the top.

I am continuing to improve in strength, mobility, endurance, stamina, and getting in overall better shape to enjoy my life more fully.

A bonus is, I have lost a little weight, and I have noticeably trimmed up. All thanks to the personal trainers and Exercise Therapists at Pro Push!

On a side note, I started at Pro Push during the Covid-19 Pandemic, and my husband had just received a kidney transplant. It was reassuring they operate a private personal training gym in Gilbert and by appointment only, versus a crowded gym facility.

Even still, they made further accommodations for me to do my sessions when less people were around with our vulnerable immune systems in such uncertain times. I felt an extra layer of protection for both me and my husband. They were incredibly considerate and professional, especially when considering major health risk factors.
